Societe Generale is one of the main European financial services companies and also maintains extensive activities in others parts of the world.
At the beginning the sign above the entrance carried the engraved enamelled glass inscription “Societe Generale favouring the development of trade and industry in France” followed by the amount of the capital.
The company started to hire employees and establish offices. Coverage of France went ahead at a steady rate. By 1870, the bank had 15 branches in Paris and 32 in the French provinces. It set up a permanent office in London in 1871. The network started to attract customers - small outfits, or smaller companies as they would be known later, and capitalists, the name for private customers at that time - while the big companies were serviced by the head office.
After privatisation in 1987, Societe Generale adopted a strategy of diversifying the services offered to private individuals. With this in mind and to more effectively establish its name in the minds of the public, the spiral was abandoned in favour of the Societe Generale representation. The advertising positioning expressed in the slogan “Combining their talents” supported the launch of a new visual identity.
